Blugold women will start NCAA title quest at home on Friday evening
The UW-Eau Claire women’s basketball team will begin its NCAA Division III tournament play at Zorn Arena on Friday (Mar. 4) against North Central University, a Minneapolis school that won the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference tournament by defeating Minnesota-Morris 52-47.
The Blugolds assured themselves of the WIAC’s automatic bid to the national tournament Friday night by overcoming a 13-point second half deficit to overwhelm UW-Whitewater 77-63 and win their first conference tournament title since 2003. That team made it to the Final Four and finished in third place.

Schumacher said the Blugolds’ game will tip off at 7:30 p.m. Friday. It will be preceded at 5 p.m. by a matchup between Millikin and Wartburg, two at-large entries in this year’s tournament.

Juneteenth celebration returns to Carson Park Saturday, a day after becoming a federal holiday

Eau Claire’s Juneteenth celebration will return to Carson Park on Saturday afternoon, a day after the first time it has been celebrated as a federal holiday.
The program is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. at the park’s Pine Pavilion. It is a free event and the public is invited to join in the celebration.
Juneteenth is the oldest known commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States, dating back to 1865. It became a federal holiday on Thursday when President Joe Biden signed legislation that was approved overwhelmingly by the U.S House of Representatives a day earlier.

Virtual discussion of national and state perspectives on COVID-19 pandemic scheduled for Tuesday evening
A Wisconsin investigative reporter will be joined by one from The New York Times Tuesday evening (March 16) to discuss insights they have gleaned from reporting on the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bram Sable-Smith, a Wisconsin Watch/Wisconsin Public Radio reporter, and Sarah Kliff from The Times will share observations related to their pandemic coverage. The program is scheduled to run from 6 to 7 p.m. on Zoom, and is open to the public at no cost. However, registration is required for this program.
