Genealogy research and the 200th anniversary of Henry David Thoreau’s birth are on the mid-month schedule at the L. E. Phillips Memorial Public Library in Eau Claire.
“Find Your Roots in Naturalization Records,” a program designed for people interested in researching the beginning of their family roots in America, is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 14. The hour-long program will take place in the Eau Claire Room on the library’s lower level.
No registration is required for this free event. Refreshments will be served.
Steve Szabados, a lecturer and author of nine genealogy books, will be the speaker. He will discuss the history of the naturalization process, including requirements for naturalization.
He will also examine how to find where ancestors were naturalized, using traditional and online sources. Where people were naturalized is the key to finding their immigration documents.
Szabados is a contributing editor for the Polish American Journal and a member of the Polish Genealogical Society of America, the Illinois Genealogy Society and the Northwest Suburban Genealogy Society. He is a genealogy volunteer at his local library in Arlington Heights, IL.
“Writers Read” Series Continues
On Thursday, Nov. 9, the Library’s “Writers Read” series will continue with a session in honor of the 200th anniversary this year of Thoreau’s birth. Local writers can sign up to share original poetry or short prose pieces that relate in some way to Thoreau’s famous chapter in Walden entitled “Where I Lived, and What I Lived for.”
The program is scheduled for 6 p.m., also in the Eau Claire room. Sign-up starts at 5:45 p.m. Presentations should be limited to five minutes or less. Listeners are welcome at the session.
“Writers Read” is a monthly Library presentation organized by Max Garland, Eau Claire’s Writer-in-Residence and former Wisconsin Poet Laureate. It features original poetry and prose written by writers who live or work in the Chippewa Valley.
Further information about both programs is available by calling 715-839-5004 or by email to librarian@eauclaire.lib.wi.us. It can also be obtained at the Library’s Information & Reference desk.
