The L. E. Phillips Memorial Public Library in Eau Claire hosted a Library Cardholder Day event on Friday (Sept. 15) as part of National Library Card Sign-up Month.
Throughout September, the Library is offering community members the opportunity to sign up for a new library card or get a free replacement for a lost or damaged card. Some 47,000 people already have a card from the Eau Claire library, according to a press release announcing the event.
Proof of residential address is needed to set up a library account.
Library cardholders were invited to bring their card to the library on Friday to receive a sweet treat and register to win one of several larger prizes. Those include a 3D Doodler Pen, Kindle Fire, and gift baskets with gift certificates to local restaurants and businesses.
“When most folks think of the library, they think books,” said Isa Small, programming librarian. “We also have movies, music and downloadable media, and we loan Wi-Fi Hotspots and iPads.
“In addition to all of the things we have, the library’s greatest offering is access,” Small added. “Inside all of those books and movies are ideas, and ideas are very powerful things.”
Community members may also apply for a library card at the BookBike, a small library branch on wheels, as it makes regular visits to the Downtown Farmers Market. The BookBike will also be traveling to select downtown businesses during September and will be at the International Fall Festival on Saturday, Sept. 23.
