The L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library in Eau Claire has launched a new self-checkout option to supplement, but not replace, the familiar process of checking out with the help of a library staff member.
The new option will be similar to retail self-checkout, according to a library press release. New library kiosks will allow customers to check out without staff assistance, or to renew items and view their holds.
Library officials said the new option will provide more privacy for customers, which can be a concern for those checking out materials related to health, personal finance or relationships.
Customers will still be able to check out materials with a library staff member, and staff will also be available to assist customers with using the self-checkout kiosks.
Staffing will not be reduced, according to the press release, but it is anticipated that the library will be able to reallocate some staffing resources to perform other tasks. This should improve the overall customer experience, according to the press release.
The new system was first used earlier in February.
