A discussion of the general grant of executive powers to the President will commemorate Constitution Day on Thursday (Sept. 15) at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
Dr. Timothy Johnson, a University of Minnesota political science professor, will analyze Article II of the U.S. Constitution, which spells out presidential powers, a topic of particular relevance in this election season. The event, which is free and open to the public, is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Room 1614 of Centennial Hall.
Johnson will review the major domestic powers granted to the President by Article II and will contrast these to the foreign affairs powers held by the chief executive. Chief sponsor of the event is the UW-Eau Claire Center for Constitutional Studies.
Johnson is Morse Alumni Distinguished Teaching Professor of Political Science at Minnesota and is a nationally recognized expert on U.S. Supreme Court oral arguments and decision making.
Constitution Day is a federal observance that recognizes the signing of the U.S. Constitution in Philadelphia on Sept. 17, 1787. When that date falls on a weekend, it is observed on a close weekday.
