The first cases of COVID-19 in both Eau Claire and Chippewa counties were confirmed Thursday (Mar. 19) by the Eau Claire City-County Health Department, the Chippewa County Department of Public Health and the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS).
Both cases involve people who traveled outside Wisconsin and likely contracted the coronavirus while traveling, according to the two county health departments.
A mid-morning email from Audrey Boerner, a City-County Health Department public health specialist, said the department understands that the person involved has self-quarantined since returning home.
Later in the day, the Chippewa County case was confirmed. It also involved an individual who had traveled, “where exposure likely occurred,” according to the county Public Health Department, which is following up with people who may have been in contact with this individual.
