On Wednesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared coronavirus a pandemic.
On the same day, Mayo-Northwest Wisconsin, where I work as an internist, announced it is transitioning to virtual meetings for any group exceeding 20 people.
In the United States, as of Wednesday, the virus has been found in 39 states and the District of Columbia. But hospitals aren’t prepared for the coming onslaught of patients, thanks in part to substandard work against the virus in the U.S. thus far.

It’s getting to be the time of the year for flu shots, according to a reminder from the Eau Claire City-County Health Department.
The department noted a multi-year study supported by the federal Centers for Disease Control which showed that getting a flu shot reduces the risk of being hospitalized with flu by 37 percent.
Since it takes about two weeks after the shot to develop full protection against flu, the CDC recommends that people get their flu shots by the end of October.
