Birthdays Still Happen
Which birthdays do you remember?
I remember when I was seven, I got to have a party and invite seven friends over. When I turned 40 I got a dozen roses from my colleagues. And now there’ll be the 2020 birthday to remember!
In addition to the usual activities, 10 minutes of puzzles on Alexa and Trivia Crack, skimming 10 newspapers, keeping up with social media and emptying the dishwasher, there were many calls from friends and family.
There was a walk with Calvin topped off by a friend driving by, stopping in the middle of the road, rolling down her window and singing “Happy Birthday.” Nobody else was on the road throughout the song and discussion afterwards.
I attended a book club by phone and a friend stopped by with pizza. Discussions all were a bit subdued, but trying to act like this was just another day.
The feeling I finished the day with was one of being blessed with friends who accept me, warts and all.
As Michael Perry said in his April 6 “Roughneck Grace” column: “In the midst of all that’s happening, I’m just happy that the joy of human connection is predicated in part on imperfection, and the willingness of others to not just see it in us, but accept it in us.”
A good birthday with promises of riotous celebrating later.
