The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has scheduled a virtual informational hearing on Monday (Apr. 20) to receive public comments concerning Advanced Disposal’s request to expand the Seven Mile Creek landfill.
It comes at the request of the Seven Mile Creek Neighborhood and will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. This will be a virtual meeting conducted using the ZOOM Remote Conferencing Platform, which is accessible by phone or computer.
Information on how to participate can be found at the end of this article.
The Seven Mile Creek Neighborhood, a group consisting of property owners who live within a one mile radius of the landfill, is highly concerned about the proposed expansion. Its founder, Kathy Campbell, said in an email that the group is asking that adverse conditions caused by landfill operations be addressed prior to granting an expansion permit.
Advanced Disposal has asked to expand the landfill by an additional 12.5 acres horizontally to the east and an additional 64 feet vertically across 22 acres, to a peak height of 1,165.5 feet.
Campbell said the neighborhood association wants to have several conditions imposed on any expansion.
Among them are restrictions on dumping waste during high winds, installation of fencing and barriers to provide a buffer zone for adjacent property and mitigation of odors so as to improve overall air quality. A reduction in the added height that would be allowed is also on that list.
The group is also asking the DNR to reject the company’s request for an exemption that would allow the landfill to be within 1,000 feet of Tower Ridge Recreational Area. Campbell said that allowing the landfill to encroach on this limit would have a negative impact on recreational enjoyment at Tower Ridge.
Public participation in the hearing would be appreciated, Campbell said.
