A pair of free seven-week workshops on “Healthy Living With Diabetes” will be available starting later this month in both Menomonie and Eau Claire.
The Menomonie workshop, sponsored by Mayo Clinic Health Systems, is scheduled for 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Mondays, starting Mar. 19 and running through Apr. 30. It will meet at the Mayo-Red Cedar Education Center, 2321 Stout Rd.
The Eau Claire workshop will meet from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Mondays, from Mar. 26 through May 7 in the Chippewa Room at the L. E. Phillips Memorial Public Library, 400 Eau Claire St. This workshop is co-sponsored by Mayo and the Eau Claire County Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC).
The workshops are aimed at adults of all ages who have Type 2 diabetes or are pre-diabetic, as well as adults who live with someone with either of those conditions. Each workshop will consist of six sessions plus a final meeting that will feature a certified diabetes educator.

These workshops are intended to help participants build confidence in their ability to manage diabetes and maintain an active and fulfilling life, according to press releases from ADRC and Mayo.
Topics to be covered in the workshops include healthy eating and nutrition; reading food labels and meal planning; medications; relaxation techniques; partnering with health care providers; short-term goal setting; monitoring blood sugar; fitness for exercise and fun; feedback and problem-solving; stress and depression management; skin and foot care; and communicating effectively with friends, family and the medical team.
The workshops will be repeated twice at the University of Wisconsin Extension Center, 227 First St. W. in Altoona. The first of these is scheduled for Wednesdays from 1 to 3:30 p.m. starting on May 2 and continuing through June 13. The second will run from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Mondays, from Nov. 5 through Dec. 17.
