JONAH Organizer Lynn Buske said in a press release that, in addition to adapting the event for COVID-19 safety, the virtual public meeting format will increase the opportunities for people to feel connected to JONAH’s activities. It will also allow for the fund-raising efforts that have traditionally been part of this event, she said.
JONAH, a local faith-based nonprofit organization, is focused on organizing the community to deal with the root causes of social inequities.
“We in JONAH learned this year, like many of us did, that we are all vulnerable to crisis and that those already struggling get hit the h ardest when things like a pandemic occur,” Buske said. “Those at the margins suffered even more when COVID-19 hit and JONAH wants to share what we’ve learned and challenge our community to reach out to their neighbor.”
Sunday’s program will begin with updates from JONAH leaders on what the organization has accomplished this year. UW-Eau Claire English Prof. David Shih will discuss diversity issues in his talk entitled “Asian American is Not a Culture.”
This will be followed by the unveiling of this year’s JONAH yearbook and breakout groups that will discuss affordable housing, child poverty, criminal justice, environmental concerns, immigration and public transit issues. Attendees will then have an opportunity to provide input on community issues.
Throughout the evening door prizes will be announced and updates will be provided on the event’s fundraising goal of $5,000.
