Mayo Clinic Health System and the Eau Claire County Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) have multiple programs coming up that are designed to promote an active lifestyle for people facing health and physical challenges.
A free Stepping On fall prevention program runs seven weeks on Wednesdays, starting on May 2, at the Shirley Doane Senior Center on 6th Street East in Menomonie. Participants will learn about improving their balance and strength training, as well as creating a safe environment at home.
““The Stepping On class gives a sense of awareness about falls, how to avoid situations that may cause a fall, what to do if you do fall, how to prepare for situations you could fall, and exercises to strengthen the body and help with balance,” Tina Tharp of Mayo Clinic Health System said in an email.
In Altoona and Menomonie, the Living Well with Chronic Conditions workshops are meant for anyone with a chronic or long-term health problem, or people who live with someone who has that kind of condition. It helps people manage their condition and lead an active, fulfilling life. The Altoona workshop is at River Pines & Prairie Pointe on S. Willson Drive on Thursdays starting May 3. The six-week workshop goes from 3 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. each week. The Menomonie workshop is on Wednesdays starting May 2 from 4:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. It will be held in the North Conference room of Mayo Clinic Health System – Red Cedar on Stout Road.
In an email, Joanne Walker of Mayo Clinic Health System cited studies showing that patients who go through the program have ended up visiting hospitals less.
“Living Well with Chronic Conditions is an evidence-based class that has been shown to have a positive effect on physical and emotional outcomes and health-related quality of life,” she said.
Mayo Clinic Health System said Thursday that each of the classes is designed for 15-16 people, and there are plenty of spots available. It shares the cost of the classes with ADRC. The registration deadline for both Menomonie programs is April 25. To sign up, click here, or call (866)375-7464.
