A community event commemorating the 50th anniversary of Neil Armstrong’s walk on the moon will be held on Saturday evening at the Hobbs Observatory at Beaver Creek Reserve north of Fall Creek.
Armstrong and fellow astronaut Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon on July 20, 1969. Armstrong, the first one off of the Eagle lunar lander, took his first step onto the moon’s surface and commented famously, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
The community is invited to celebrate “Neil’s Night” at the observatory, starting with a presentation on the historic event at 8 p.m. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m.
Displays and activities about the Apollo 11 mission will be available and, weather permitting, telescopes will be available to the public about 9:30 p.m.
The event will be hosted by the Chippewa Valley Astronomical Society and co-sponsored by the UW-Eau Claire planetarium. Further information is available from Prof. Lauren Likkel of the UW-EC Physics and Astronomy department at likkel@uwec.edu.
To reach Beaver Creek Reserve, use the north approach due to a current detour (see the link at cvastro.org). For the Hobbs Observatory, turn right just past the Nature Center.
