The North Central Council of Latin Americanists will meet at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Oct. 12 and 13.
The group’s annual interdisciplinary conference is held at a different Midwest region campus each year. The 2018 conference, to be held on the third floor of UW-EC’s Davies Center, will have more than 60 participants from as far away as Peru.
Community members and UW-EC students, faculty and staff are welcome to attend any of the conference panels, which run all day on Oct. 12 and until noon on Oct. 13, as well a the conference keynote address on the evening of Oct. 12.
Prof. Macarena Gómez-Barris will be the conference keynote speaker. She is the chair of the Department of Social Science and Director of Cultural Studies at the Global South Center of Pratt Institute in New York City.
She will discuss ideas from her new book, “Beyond the Pink Tide” (2018), which analyzes recent artistic and activist efforts across the Americas with an emphasis on political music, film, performance and visual art. She will deal with political undercurrents and submerged perspectives that relate to these different areas.
Her talk is scheduled for 7:15 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 12 in the Ojibwe room at Davies. Light refreshments will be provided.
The conference will include presentations on a variety of issues related to Latin America or people from there who are now in the United States. Specific topics at this year’s conference will include education, politics, literature, linguistics and economics among others. A complete schedule can be found here.
A limited number of seats at each session will be available for guests. Most events will be livestreamed to nearby rooms in case the seating capacity at a session is reached.
UW-EC’s Latin American Studies program is the primary host for the conference, with support also provided by three other academic programs and five departments at the university, its Center for International Education, Visiting Minority Scholars and Artists program. College of Arts and Sciences and the UW-Eau Claire Foundation.
