Saturday, May 9
By Katherine Schneider, for the CVPost
I started the day spending time with an old friend who had made waffles for me with all kinds of innards.
A nap and a walk – noticing all the spring birds singing – followed. Calvin got a new canvas squeaky toy that looks like a purple cat and wasn’t destroyed in five minutes, despite his best efforts. The day was off to a good start in his opinion too.
I resisted the temptation to eat for supper more of the waffles my friend left with me – only once a day!
I led a poetry circle for National Braille Press on the phone and it went very well. We had 25 people attending, ranging in age from seven to 70-something.
Many different kinds of poetry
People shared favorite poems and poems they’d written. There were funny poems, inspiring poems and just plain beautiful ones.
Then after a light supper, I cracked a beer and settled back to listen to the American Academy of Poets “Shelter in Poems” virtual poetry reading. Poet laureates and famous folk read poems. Here’s one that was read that I liked a lot:
Blessing the Boats, by Lucille Clifton
(At St. Mary’s)
may the tide
that is entering even now
the lip of our understanding
carry you out
beyond the face of fear
may you kiss
the wind then turn from it
certain that it will
love your back may you
open your eyes to water
water waving forever
and may you in your innocence
sail through this to that
All in all, a nourishing day that will help me sail from this to that in this crazy Corona world.
