By Katherine Schneider, for the CVPost
I’m sure you’ve noticed that as the days get shorter, there’s more focus on light.
Hanukkah lights, Diwali lights, Christmas candles and more. In this pandemic time, it almost seems like more people are lighting up their houses than usual. As a blind person who can barely tell if the sun is out when I’m outdoors, I’m no expert on lights.
So, I’ll broaden the discussion to delights of the season which may involve literal or metaphoric light.
Locally, two shout-outs:
- In Chippewa Falls, Irvine Park’s light display has a nurse in protective gear, doing battle with COVID this year—nice addition!
- The Chippewa Valley Writer’s Guild’s annual “Joy to the Word” program will be virtual this year. The free presentation, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Thursday (Dec. 17), will feature wintery stories by four local writers and original music by The Nunnery along with original visuals by Erik Elstran. The link to the streamed program is available by registering through the Pablo Center.
Online, Handel’s Messiah will be streamed on Saturday (Dec. 19) at 2 p.m., offered by the Hudson Valley Philharmonic. The free virtual singalong event can be accessed here
Christmas books:
I revisited The Polar Express by Chris van Allsburg because of its hopeful message that the Christmas spirit is still around. Another book I’m sharing with several folks on my gift list is The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy. It’s not about Christmas, but is strong on love, joy and hope.
May your days be full of light and delights.
