Wisconsin’s homeless population declined this year by more than double the national rate, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
But a local agency that provides overnight housing for up to 32 men and eight women doesn’t see signs of that decline. Sojourner House, 618 S. Barstow St. in Eau Claire, has been operating at capacity since last March.
Sojourner House, a program of Catholic Charities, has averaged more than 1,000 sheltered stays per month by homeless individuals since it opened in November of 2011. Overnight stays have ranged from a single night up to 90 nights. Guests have ranged in age from 18 to 77, with an average age of 41, according to information from the organization.
